‘It took my breath away. I had never seen anything of that size or quality outside of a museum before,’ says our specialist Margo Oganesian of this monumental imperial Russian vase.⠀
.⠀
Despite its Russian origins, the vase depicts the Austrian Emperor Franz I (1768–1835).⠀
.⠀
‘Following the war, Russia, Austria and Prussia formed the Holy Alliance in order to guard the borders of Europe,’ explains Oganesian. ‘We think the vase was possibly commissioned as a gift for one of the royal heads of state’.⠀
.⠀
An important and monumental imperial porcelain vase by the Imperial Porcelain Factory, St Petersburg, Period of Nicholas I (1836). Porcelain, 58 ⅞ in (152 cm). Estimate: £800,000–1,200,000. ⠀
.⠀
Important Russian Art – 26 November at Christie’s London.⠀
