The representation of poverty is at once political and personal, revealing as much about society as it does about the person who documents it. But what is universal, is that the stories are never just about poverty; they are about powerlessness, prejudice, stigma, suppression and a myriad of other complex structures of suffering.

Today on Magnum, we speak to Ferdinando Scianna about his own experience of poverty, how his childhood informed his work documenting the lives of those living on the bread line in Naples in the 90s, and how the issues highlighted at the time remain today. Link in bio.
