The Rock Ptarmigan is the prefectural bird of Nagano

The white of their feathers is a sign that winter has arrived in the mountains. Their feather coat is very warm and even covers their legs and feet―a rarity among other species of grouse.

Both ptarmigans and humans want to keep their feet warm during winter.
