She started the trip trying to jump off this dock. She sat down, her hand in mine, and tried to push herself off the ledge. Just like that. I pulled her back. “We’re really high up, sweetie!” I said. “We can’t jump from here.” She looked at me, visibly upset. “Hoppa där!!” (Jump there!). She points to the water, determined. “We can’t - it’s really scary” I reply. “You’re too little.” I pick her up and we start walking away. She objects, but only for a second. “FISHIE MAMMA! FISHIE!” she proclaims, pointing at the school of needle fish in the water beneath us. We spend the rest of the afternoon by the steps, carefully walking up and down to swim. Later, I change my mind. Why not let her jump? She’s a Pisces, born on a full moon. She’s meant for water. It’s her mom that’s still getting used to flowing with the tide.⁣ ⁣ The next day we’re back on the dock. I’m in the water, ready to catch her. Dennis is by her side. She suddenly gets tentative. Dangling her feet off the dock, she changes her mind. “No.” She says. “Inte hoppa.” (No jump). “Do you want Pappa to jump with you?” I ask. She nods. “Hoppa. FISHIE!”⁣ ⁣ So Dennis jumped off the dock with her. My heart was in my throat the whole time. It looked even scarier from the water, like they were 15 feet high. She wrapped her little arms around his neck and on a count of 3, they jumped. They went all the way under and for a second, I changed my mind. She’s only 20 months old! She’s too little! Then they burst through the surface, sputtering.⁣ ⁣ “MAMMA!” - it’s the first word out of her mouth as they surface. I grab her and she has that look on her face; the look you get having just done something that both scared and excited you. Her eyes are big and wide. “Did you have fun?” I ask. “FISHIE!!!” She responds. I take that as a yes.⁣ ⁣ When we get back up she starts telling me the story, in that toddler way where only every third word or so makes any sense, of how she jumped off the dock with daddy and there were fishies and it was scary and she did it. She talks and talks and talks. It’s the longest story I’ve ever heard. She’s beaming. ⁣ ⁣ I’m beaming too. ⁣ ⁣ Maybe there is no such thing as too little?????? ⁣
