Trash exhibition is officially open! Go check out my work alongside the work of many amazing artists! at Arcola St Studio, 23-27 Arcola Street, London, E8 curated by @athenapaginton My work was inspired by the fact that records are covered in that thin plastic sheet when you buy them new. I received all of my ‘Yesterday was Forver’ records the day after I got asked to be a part of this project. I was asked to collect all of my single use plastic for 2 wks and then make it into something. I was pretty horrified at how much of this plastic I could collect from something I was making as an artist. I went on a plastic journey and found out that records didn’t always have this, only imports used to have them. I thought of how if all of a sudden books were covered in plastic covers we would, as consumers, pick the plastic covered one, as it would feel fresher and new. We want our goods undamaged. We strive for perfection. But this is unnecessary and also harming our oceans and earth and animals. I decided to make music out of the trash from the music I was already making. I wrote a song called ‘Trash’ (recorded with @woolymamothsounds ) cut up the plastic sheets into tiny pieces. I used epoxy resin and cake moulds to make record shapes and put the plastic and some epoxy dye into the moulds. Nick from @cutsyldn helped me experiment with actually cutting audio onto the epoxy records but it didn’t cut as they were too thick and broke the cutting diamonds. I got in touch with some people about the most experimental sustainable records out there, the main problem people face is audio quality issues. @paulatrounce helped me smooth the records down and @aidanzamiri shot a music video for me! Trash exists tonight at this exhibition and you can take and keep a record (art piece, the records don’t actually play) if you get down there! I wanted this to be a zero waste project if possible so I want these pieces to go to fans. This has inspired me very much! So look out for further experimentation with my next musical releases! ?
