Japan has an increasing number of vacant homes — and they're giving them away for free.
Why does the world's third-largest economy have so many abandoned properties? Demographic changes.
An aging and shrinking population has left many towns and villages empty across Japan. In 2013, there were 8.2 million vacant homes, or 13.52% of the country's total housing stock.
There's even a Japanese term for vacant homes: Akiya.
Websites called "akiya banks" list these homes to try and find buyers. Frequently, the homes are free, with the buyer having to pay only taxes and fees.
