The setting:
Woman traveling alone with infant. Fancy Car Company cancels at the last minute. Fancy AirBnB Company forgot that she needed help getting her 3 large suitcases (and stroller) down the fourth floor walk up (we were gone for 7 months, you do the math). Maintenance guy to the rescue, who hauls all the bags down all the stairs and waits patiently with woman and baby. Woman calls Dominican cab driver she met the day before. He books it to Manhattan in 20 minutes (with an infant car seat!) Both of these guys are native Spanish speakers. Woman confuses most of her Spanish with French now, ?
from working there for a year. They spoke English, anyway.
The point is, they were true gentlemen; Latino immigrants with children born and raised in this country, enriching it, making it better.
Please don’t hate on me for this post. It may sound like white privilege, but it is genuine and heartfelt. As a new mother trying to get to the airport on her own, I am grateful to these Good Hombres for their help. Trump, you are wrong. And you have no idea what the women of America want. (“Caravans!” “Invasions!” Oh My!) I hope my son grows up in an America where your rhetoric is... forgotten? Laughable?
