In 1869, artist Thomas Matthews Rooke became a studio assistant to the famous Pre-Raphaelite, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones.⠀

In 1881, Burne-Jones was commissioned to design mosaics for the interior of the American Church in Rome, the first Protestant church to be built in the city.⠀

This watercolour is a study for part of the ceiling of the apse, completed by Rooke after Burne-Jones’s death in 1898.⠀
