Photo by @nicholesobecki | Children race each other across a shallow stretch of Lake Turkana, the largest desert lake in the world. This stark area in Kenya’s arid north is a possible site of mankind's birth, hosting the fossil deposits at Koobi Fora and the remains of many early hominins. It was a joyful moment watching these kids zip across the planet’s oldest landscape known to have been inhabited by man. There’s a darker story here though, of a long-neglected people whose livelihoods as fishermen are increasingly at risk. This summer UNESCO added Lake Turkana to the list of endangered World Heritage sites, primarily due to Ethiopia's construction of a hydroelectric and irrigation dam on the Omo River, which replenishes the lake seasonally. Many fear the dam will cause the lake level to reduce dramatically, causing disaster for this ancient land and the people who still survive here. #turkana #kenya #unesco #nicholesobecki
