The day before he was my patient, he killed 2 little kids, and critically injured 3 others; they were my patients too

The IED he placed was detonated by the group of kids as they played outside, blasting the 2 instantly in half, and turning their bones into shrapnel that fragmented and tore apart their surviving friends

I treated the survivors; massive, multi-systems trauma, amputations, severe bleeding, and grotesque injuries that cannot be comprehended nor associated with innocent children

Word in the village spread that he was the man responsible for their deaths, and in attempt to flee, he blew a checkpoint and was stopped via gunfire

He survived the shooting, and several hundred pounds of explosives and IED components were found in the back of his vehicle

Because he was still alive, he was detained and we were called to extract him and stabilize him for further interrogation

The iron scent of children’s blood still lingered in the helicopter, as we loaded the man responsible for their deaths and dismembering into the back

As I looked down at this man clinging to life, I acknowledged that he was responsible for murdering the children whose blood still stained my clothes, and I struggled with the most profound inner conflict I have ever experienced

His eyes were pure hatred; there was absolutely zero remorse or shame for what he had done

At the time, my 2 sons were roughly the same age as the children killed in the blast; they were worlds away, and I hadn’t seen or kissed them in months

I had however, seen dozens of innocent children killed or maimed in crossfire and explosions

This man, injured and dying before me, was responsible for at least 2 of them, if not more

As I treated his injuries, he began to spit blood and vomit in my face, and curse at me in pashto

I still see his face, and I still feel his hatred
-
But it’s his, and countless others’ whose hatred I have felt, that inspires and motivates me to share even more love and light

To spread compassion, forgiveness, empathy, patience, acceptance, and hope

Because fuck that guy, and all the assholes trying to do otherwise
