Photo by @mathiasdepardon | A herd of cattle are heading back toward the town of Hasankeyf by the banks of the Tigris River. The Tigris and Euphrates occupy a pivotal place in the daily life of 23 million people living in Turkey, Iraq, and Syria. The history of these rivers and their presence in our own cultural history may be one of the oldest in the worl, spanning some 10,000 years of world heritage. The water crisis in the Mesopotamia is not only a result of climate change or Iraq mismanagement, some also argue that it is caused by Turkey’s water acquisition and the construction of dams in Southern Anatolia, such as the Ilisu dam. In 2025 the Tigris-Euphrates river basin could be under eight times more stress than in 2011. By 2040, these two mighty rivers may not even reach the sea.
