‘Théme C Variation 8’ is one of 158 drawings that Matisse created from 1941–42. ‘For a year now I've been making an enormous effort in drawing,’ the artist wrote during that time. ‘I say effort but that's a mistake, because what has occurred is a “floraison” after 50 years of effort.’⠀
