Dreaming of warmer days... ?
Also just found out I will be on a special issue of @bbcwomanshour discussing sexual empowerment and women in music on Boxing Day. I remember feeling very insecure about being overtly sexual in any images when I started out in the music industry, desperately feeling the need to be judged as a songwriter and musician before anything else. When I shot the artwork for the ‘Burn’ EP last year with @lucrecia.taormina it was the first time I felt comfortable shooting an image like this. Maybe it was because we had a brilliant team of all women. Maybe because I finally felt in control of my creative output and empowered by my sexuality and not ashamed of it. I feel like the relationship between womens’ sexuality and power is being redefined by a new generation, and I generally find it pretty exciting to see where it will go, although I worry ‘owning your sexuality’ is a phrase that can sometimes be borrowed and abused to validate images and output that perpetuate problems around reductive female stereotypes and objectification.... wow that was a mouthful. Thoughts? Please discuss!!
