How many of y’awl think that hip-hop came from the Bronx?…It came from the Imbongi, the griots, & the oral historians of Africa!! From our music to our technology to our slang…it all came from those who paved the way for us. Lester Young was calling Count Basie “homeboy” 90 years ago! Doo wop, bebop, hip-hop, laptop ((:0))—it’s all part of the same evolution. People don’t usually talk about why we ended up with the words bebop, doo-wop, & hip-hop, but it came from a certain sociological situation...Our music wasn’t born out of a specific coast, rather, it was born out of a serious slavery situation. That should radically change the way we view our art…Everything we do today is an extension of the history that came before us & if we don’t recognize it, we’re in danger of repeating some of the same nonsense that went down in the past. It’s a beautiful thing to reflect & learn…rather than to reflect & repeat. If U haven’t had a chance to visit the @nmaahc, the museum in this photo & the one you see throughout my @netflix doc, I’d highly suggest taking some time to do so…Absolutely POWERFUL! ??
