I have no words to describe this tragedy. A little girl lost her life because we didn’t give her water. Where is our humanity. This was a little girl, a beautiful soul, a human being. Open your eyes people, but most importantly, open your hearts. ? #Repost @katewalsh ・・・ #Repost @lrknost “This is 7-yr-old Jakelin. She walked thousands of miles with her father to escape rape, extreme poverty, violent gangs, and more, and to exercise their universal, legal human right to seek asylum. Border agents poured out water left by humanitarian organizations for migrants who’ve been forced to wait weeks and sometimes months to apply for asylum once they arrived at the border only to find that many ports of entry have been shut down by the current U.S. administration. When Jakelin and her father tried to cross the border to present themselves to Border Patrol and apply for asylum, they were taken into custody and put on a bus to a detention center in Texas. On the trip Jakelin became sick. Her father repeatedly begged for help and was ignored. 48 hours later she died of dehydration. I have a little girl close to this age. I would do ANYTHING to keep her safe from rape and starvation and abuse. I would walk thousands of miles to try to find safety. I would beg for help. And I would be broken forever if she was left to die when help was available. I’m devastated by the loss of this little person. She deserved so much better from us. We have to come together and do better than this. We have to look at our own political and corporate culpability in destabilizing the home nations of these immigrants fleeing for their lives. We have to step up on the global stage and quickly, legally, and humanely intake and process asylum applicants. We are not alone on this planet. We have a global responsibility that we have agreed to fulfill as a first world nation. We broke our promise to this little girl and her family. And now she’s gone. We have to do better. And we have to start now.” L.R.Knost #humanityinunity #unityinhumanity
