Every year, millions of monarch butterflies migrate from Canada to the warm mountains of Mexico. The journey takes them approximately two months.

In 1996, about one billion monarchs wintered there. It was the year with the largest number of monarchs, covering 44 acres of forest. In 2013, they covered less than two acres—the lowest area in recorded history. Climate change, hurricanes, and illegal logging are all factors, but another problem comes largely from the US: herbicides and urbanization are killing milkweed plants along their migration routes—plants they rely to lay their eggs.
