#BehindTheShot with #CanonExplorerOfLight @bob_davis: "I wanted to capture a portrait of the Groom Zach that he would be emotionally connected too. He and his wife to be were getting married in his childhood home in Virginia, his father has created a little piece of paradise with his master gardening skills. I wanted to create a portrait that would connect him to his surroundings. I framed Zach in their living room picture window with the reflection of tall pine trees that wrap around their property. How many times has Zach looked out that window dreaming of where his life would take him? I could clearly see the reflection of the trees and the sky, but I could not see Zach inside. The solution to the challenge was to light Zach from the inside to balance the brightness of the outside. I used one off camera flash, a 600EX RT with a grid to control the size and shape of the of the light to highlight his face, and added a little diffusion. I used manual flash control at ½ power for the precise balance I was striving for. I did not want to over-light his face. Keep in mind this simple rule: Shutter Speed is = to ambient light. Aperture is = to flash exposure. ISO is how sensitive the camera is to light. I choose an ISO low enough as to keep the shutter speed at sync of 1/200th of a second. I then used live view to strike the right balance of ambient light and flash. My goal was to underexpose the reflection and use an aperture value with enough depth of field to ensure Zach was in focus while shooting through the window. I strive to get the photograph right in-camera! By setting my white balance to 6800* Kelvin, it gave the feeling of a warm late afternoon sunset. In reality, it was one o’clock in the afternoon just minutes before their ceremony. I believe in shooting with purpose, having a photograph in mind, make the image and move on. It’s their wedding day, not a photo shoot! Share the Light, Bob Davis."
