Mines closures in #Germany have been happening since the 1980s and were once met with mass #protests by workers. In the western town of Bottrop, those who remained at the Prosper-Haniel #mine—officially closed on Dec. 21, having produced over 300 million tons of coal since opening 155 years ago—had long known this day would come. Younger miners at Prosper-Haniel have been offered rehabilitation courses, to help them find new lines of work. Those over the age of 49 can take early retirement, which is not a prospect everyone relishes, says photographer @nannaheitmann, who spent about two years chronicling the mine and surrounding areas. “Some of them wonder, what will I do?” In this photograph, guards of honor are seen at a traditional gathering some 800 former #miners in September 2017.
