FLAMING LIPS’ TRIBUTE TO BOWIE AND BING - “Every child must be made aware...” -
Following @イマン・アブドゥルマジド’s Instagram post of the beautiful David Bowie and Bing Crosby duet of Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy yesterday, we thought we’d highlight a new version that may have passed you by this year.
The Flaming Lips have long flown the Bowie flag very high and a quick YouTube search reveals that their Bowie covers stretch back over twenty five years.
Their versions of Bowie’s songs have always seemed sincere and the explosion of costume and colour saturating this version doesn’t detract from the message, which tends to get buried in the spoof versions out there.
The still in our montage from the 1977 broadcast of the original duet suggests the smile Bowie may have displayed had he seen the Lips’ version, while an unsure Bing looks on at a blue-faced Bowie (from the Loving The Alien video). Well, clearly it’s a look that Wayne Coyne (Lips’ singer) is comfortable with.
If the joyous reactions to this video of the children present at our Christmas gathering yesterday are anything to go by, today’s lyric quotation is particularly apt.
