Local villagers realized how rare and special this fish was and decided to protect their water by farming organically, using no fertilizers or pesticides, and to keep livestock out of the stream as well. To further increase the barb’s chance at survival, researchers established a second small population in the same basin, and a handful of Western European zoos and aquariums now care for assurance colonies, where breeding can be carefully managed.
