14 February 2018, Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 of his schoolmates and teachers as well as injuring 17 others. Sadly, it was not the first or the last mass shooting to occur in the states this year, but this horrific tragedy — the deadliest US mass school shooting since Columbine — galvanised a whole generation of young people adamant that they should be the last to suffer for their country’s lack of effective gun control legislation. ⠀
