#HappyNewYear! For hundreds of people in and around New York City, celebrating the new year means taking a dip in the icy Atlantic Ocean during the annual New Year’s Day Swim at Coney Island. The idea of swimming in the winter was introduced in the United States by Bernarr Macfadden, known as the “Father of Physical Culture.” An early advocate for outdoor exercise, Macfadden believed that taking a dip in the ocean during the winter could restore one’s immunity and stamina. In 1903, Macfadden founded the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, the oldest organization of its kind.
