Photo by @paulnicklen | Why do whales breach? Specifically why do you think this sperm whale was breaching? For me, two things are obvious: do you see that piece of dead skin clinging to the side of her rostrum (head)? After these whales breach, we would slip into the water and see dead skin floating everywhere. Imagine the impact when she slams her 30,000 pounds onto the surface of the water. Whales need to get rid of old skin which prevents them from being covered with parasites. Another thing was quite obvious: the day after this epic display of breaching, all of the whales disappeared. Whales communicate in a variety of ways and this is one of them. Another thing seems quite obvious to me; sperm whales have the largest brain of any animal on Earth. Their brains outweigh ours by five times which tells me that we have not even scratched the surface in understanding these complex, mysterious and sentient beings. The fact that they allow us into their world is a gift beyond words. And, of course, they must do this for fun.
