Here’s an update about Chicken the declawed cat. Mary, her foster mom, took her to The Pet Doctor yesterday to see Dr Marcy Hammerle. An exam of her toes revealed that all digits of both front paws were fixed in a bent position and that they could not be extended manually. ??? This is a common condition that most declawed cats develop that owners would never know about. Dr Marcy said that when the toes contract after being declawed, over time, it shifts the ends of P2 so they are no longer cushioned by the toe pad. She said that they will see calluses build up where the bone is hitting the ground. This condition starts to become painful because they no longer have any cushioning. PLEASE STOP DECLAWING YOUR KITTIES! THEY ARE SILENTLY SUFFERING FROM THIS AMPUTATION PROCEDURE! ?? Chicken is doing better walking so we will not be having her part of the clinical trial for the new pain med for declawed cats. Dr Hammerle said that there is a surgical procedure that will release the tendons but we want to do everything non-invasive first and see how she is doing in a month or so. Chicken has been through so much pain and it’s been a nightmare for her because of being declawed. We want what’s best for her and the least amount of suffering. Mary the foster mom says that Chicken the cat is a sweet, quiet, and playful kitty. Her favorite type of toy is a string. She said she loves to sit on her lap or on her desk and watch out the window for birds and squirrels. Can you help us find a forever home for this beautiful kitty in the St Louis area. Send me an email if you are interested in adopting her. [email protected] If Chicken ever needs medical care for issues from her declaw, my nonprofit will be paying for her doctor visits. Please give a big thank you to Mary the foster mom and her husband, and to Cassie and Nirvana who drove Chicken from Ohio. They are my heroes! We have big things planned for my nonprofit so please become a City the Kitty Crusader volunteer in your state and support our organization if you can. Please go to www.citythekitty.org for more info on how to help us. Google “City the Kitty Chicken the cat” to read about her sad story.
