It is an experience.”—Mark Rothko ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Rothko was a pioneer of color field painting, a branch of the avant-garde movement known as Abstract Expressionism that developed in New York in the 1950s. Born Marcus Rothkowitz, he immigrated to the United States from Dvinsk (then part of the Russian Empire, now Latvia) in 1913, and became increasingly integrated into NYC’s Depression-era art world. He eventually developed the signature abstract format to which he would return—with refinements and variations—for the rest of his life: two or three horizontal bars of varying size and color dominate large, vertical canvases and appear to hover on the picture surface.
