Born Hannah Gluckstein, the British artist Gluck (1895-1978) cropped her hair, smoked a pipe and bought her clothes from men’s tailors. Her unique artistic identity and bohemian lifestyle attracted immense public interest in her ‘one-man shows’. 'Flora’s Cloak’, from 1923, was painted following a decade of escape and rebellion when Gluck had fled to Lamorna, Cornwall, and set up a dilapidated cottage amongst a community of artists from 1916. Once owned by artist’s lover, the famed society florist Constance Spry, the extraordinary painting hung in her London shop where the painting was known affectionately as ‘Interflora’. Gluck considered The Fine Art Society on New Bond Street her second home, and held her final show there in 1937 during which she stayed in the hotel opposite, watching from the window as a stream of visitors arrived to pay tribute. ‘Flora’s Cloak’ will now be offered by the gallery at Sotheby’s to celebrate their 142 year history on 5 February. #SothebysxFAS @thefineartsociety #Gluck
