When I was 21 I got signed to a major label…we spent almost four years making a million dollar record with some of the top writers and producers at the time…this was my moment, all I ever dreamed of since i was a little girl. A month before the record was about to be released, the president left the label and I got dropped. It was the most devastating phone call of my life at the time…I’ll never forget where i was, the feeling in my chest and the depression that set in like the plague. In that moment, I decided to say fuck you to the world and started my own underground electro pop band called UltraVioletSound...it was an intense time in my life but also a liberating time. I wrote the music I wanted to write, we toured the country and Europe, we built a die hard underground cult following, I glammed myself out in every disgusting club bathroom across the nation, drank whiskey like a sailor and I didn’t give ANY fucks. After six years of literal blood, sweat and tears, we just couldn’t do it anymore and I was depressed, lost and insanely broke. I spent the next few years writing, hustling, meeting different artists/writers and figuring out what my life was all about...am i even good? Is music really my calling? All of those demonic questions swirling around in my head on the daily. Long story EXTREMELY short....Katy Perry (who I had known through my band and became better friends with through working closely with her friend Ferras on his music) invited me to write with her one day when she was working on Prism. I arrived to the studio that day and a few magical & surreal hours later we wrote Dark Horse-the diamond certified 11x platinum song that changed my life and opened the door for an incredible career in music as a songwriter-i was filing for bankruptcy when we wrote that song. The moral of the story is i always knew i was destined to shine and never ever stopped hustling no matter how grim it got. You never know what’s around the corner...stay strong, have faith, keep believing in yourself and go for it with extreme vigor and ruthlessness. And PS- don’t worry I reversed that bankruptcy just in time b/c I knew I was finally about to be rich as fuck okuuur! ?
