At Eternity’s Gate by Vincent van Gogh portrays a sorrowing man with his head in his hands. It was painted in the artist’s last months when periods of mental illness sometimes prevented him from painting outdoors in the sun. On these occasions he worked from prints or drawings instead, and this painting was based on one that he’d made as a younger man. He gave it the same English title, but transformed it into a colourful painting set in a room like his own.

The work inspired the title of the 2018 biographical drama film about the artist's final years, directed by Julian Schnabel and starring Willem Dafoe as Van Gogh.
