In ancient Assyria, lion hunting was a kingly sport. Overcoming the wild ferocity of a lion asserted a king’s ability to keep his people safe from the forces of chaos in the world.

#Ashurbanipal recorded his lion-hunting exploits in a series of reliefs that once decorated his palace at Nineveh (in modern-day Iraq). The reliefs are remarkable pieces of sculpture, representing the king’s lion hunts in incredible – and sometimes gory – detail.
