Photo by @richardbarnes | For a story on laser archaeology, I photographed a site called Rani-ki-Vav, “the queen’s stepwell,” in Patan, Gujarat, India. Stepwells are used to obtain water, and can go as deep as seven or eight stories into the ground. Rani-ki-Vav was constructed to resemble an inverted temple that descends to seven levels, emphasizing the spiritual aspects of water. It was constructed in the 11th century as a monument by Queen Udaymati in memory of her husband. The stepwell was flooded by a nearby river and wasn’t excavated until the 1980s. The carvings of Hindu deities were incredibly well preserved by the silt over the centuries. Today, this site is a place of gathering and celebration. The technicians from CyArk with whom I worked used laser scanning technology to survey and record every inch of the monument, which required scaffolding and repelling down the interior walls to the water source below. #CyArk #laserarchaeology #preservation #archaeology #ranikivav #India
