January 27, is Holocaust Remembrance Day. Seen here, the almost consecutive numbers tattooed on the arms of three prisoners who stood in the same line in Auschwitz. The three men were photographed by @gettyreportage contributor @urielsinai in Bnei Zion, Israel, in 2009. The men were strangers to each other in Auschwitz, but reunited a few years prior to this photo, following a newspaper interview with one of them. From left to right: Menachem Shulovitz, 80 years old; Anshel Udd Sharezky, 81 years old; and Jacob Zabetzky, 83 years old. Auschwitz prisoners, both Jewish or non-Jewish, were tattooed with serial numbers, first on their chests and then their left arms. An estimated 400,000 numbers were tattooed in Auschwitz and its sub-camps; only some several thousand survivors are still alive today. This image is from “NUMBERED,” a photo and video documentary project by @urielsinai and Dana Doron dedicated to the last bearers of Auschwitz tattoos. You can see more images from this series on the Reportage website, and the documentary is now available on Netflix. #holocaustremembranceday #auschwitz
