We're marking the first day of #LGBTHistoryMonth 2019 with a photograph by South African artist Zanele Muholi. Self-identifying as a visual activist, Muholi’s photographic work is deeply intertwined with their advocacy on behalf of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex community in South Africa and beyond. 'ID Crisis' is one of six prints from Zanele Muholi’s series 'Only Half the Picture 2003–6'. The titles of the photographs in the series allude to the subject’s vulnerabilities and expose the difficulties black #LGBTIQ individuals face in a society that often signals #LGBTQ practices as alien to African culture.
