As storm clouds began to roll in, shrouding the snows of Kilimanjaro high above, an elephant herd knew it was time to move. The matriarch had her herd stopped on the dry savannah nearby when the setting sun burst through the clouds in the western sky. As almost as if it was a calling, she pulled them together and began to trudge through the swamps towards the far off horizon as the dusty air soon gave way to the refreshing rain. It’s hard to name many other animals as complex and mesmerizing as elephants. However, poaching and habitat loss have been causing a steady decline in their herd sizes across much of the continent, threatening their very existence. While it is a difficult problem to tackle fully, by continuing to spread the word, we can help ensure we never see an Africa without elephants.
