I’ve had A DAY hangin in the SF airport after missing a connection to Dulles to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports day with the @womenssportsfoundation and within the first hour of my day I had two very different interactions that I thought were so telling/interesting.

The first one:

Me and “that guy” make eye contact.
.
.
Guy: (obviously aware of my wheelchair) ....Skiing accident?
.
.
Me: yeah! Snowboarding, back in 2000
.
.
Guy: well, are you gonna be alright?
.
.
Me: I mean I don’t think I’m ever going to walk again but other than that...
.
.
Guy: (interrupts me) well that’s not alright!
.
.
(Awkward End of convo)

The second interaction was with the isle chair attendant lady Miriam:

Miriam: (in a Colombian accent) how can I best assist you?
.
.
Me: oh I’m good, I can transfer myself!
.
.
Miriam: oh yes, you look strong. Are you an athlete?
.
.
Me: yes, I played wheelchair basketball and a skier!
.
.
Miriam: OMGGGG for the Paralympics?!? I LOVE THE @paralympics (so stoked)
.
.
Me: yes?
.
.
Miriam: proceeds to fan girl out on me and asks all about my career, looks me up on youtube and then asks for an autograph and picture???
.
.
. . .
Moral of the story..don’t be THAT GUY: educate yourself on the Paralympics, get stoked on what people from all “walks” of life can do and open your mind to the world of disability, it makes for WAY better interactions:)
