Pressing this thought from H Rap Brown further on “ideology should come from struggle” which can be paraphrased as ideas should come from reality and reality shouldn’t come from ideas. The idea of non-violence had to be tested with the reality of violence in the Civil Rights era as Professor Holloway speaks to in this lecture. The idea of a thing is valid if it is in ones designs to keep it purely as an idea. However an idea that seeks to be realized is only as valid as its ability to be realized in the field. As we meditate about the language of blackness and the cliches of the black experience this month we can set analysis upon the phrases “House nigga” and “Field nigga” through the lens of ideal and real. The “house nigga” lives in the ideal position whereas the “field nigga” populates the real world conditions. There is tension between the house and the field. Maybe the field has an expectation for the house to take advantage of its closeness to oppression and assassinate the master and perhaps the response of the house to the field is a want to preserve its condition and status. This segregation of the ideal and the real, the house and the field and even in real terms the difference between Northern blacks and Southern blacks of past and present is one of the fundamental disconnects and disruptors of black organizational and unification projects. Coming to “terms” with the language and metaphors of the black experience should help in closing some of those divides on a fundamental level. #BHM
