#BehindTheShot with #CanonExplorerOfLight @adam_jones_photo: "During the last week of January, I spent 3 full days in Yellowstone’s famous Lamar Valley filming wildlife along with a few scenic images. The weather was not very cooperative, falling snow nearly every day made it difficult to use long telephoto lenses much of the time. This sheep, native to the U.S. was mostly concerned about finding food, as such, was on the move searching and briefly stopping to eat along the way. I love photographing wildlife at eye level, or slightly below, and in this case the sheep were feeding high above me. The sheep worked their way down the steep slope to just a few feet above eye level for a great perspective. Two previous days I had scouted the cliffs and there were a few sheep, but nothing very exciting photographically. On the third day the snow stopped and was replaced with bright overcast light, perfect for the situation. The biggest challenge was finding a parking spot in the limited pullouts to legally park, and to keep my fingers warm with temps in the low 20’s. A group of us spent about an hour filming and observing a group of 20+ sheep including this adult male. A trusty lightweight 7D Mark II was my camera of choice. The cameras fast capture rate of 10 fps accompanied by the EOS 100-400 IS II at F8, 1/800th sec. 400 ISO at 280mm made this capture rather routine. A 1/800th sec. shutter speed permitted hand holding the camera and lens and to easily track the movements of the herd or individual subjects. I really wanted to capture the single ram on my brand new EOS 600 F4 IS III lens, but the herd was constantly moving closer. The framing flexibility of the 100-400 IS II lens made it easy to maintain composition and correct image size as the animals moved closer."
