Photo by @CarltonWard | Draped over mangrove roots, an American crocodile suns itself on a winter day in Everglades National Park. I paddled right by in my kayak on the first day of the 2012 Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition. Our team trekked more than 1,000 miles over the next 100 days to trace the best remaining wildlife corridor still connecting the Everglades in South Florida to the Okefenokee Swamp in southern Georgia. Such a close-up crocodile sighting on day one felt like a great omen for our adventure. South Florida is the only place where the ranges of American crocodiles and American alligators overlap. American crocodiles can be found throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, and South America, as far south as Venezuela and Peru. Alligators live throughout the southeastern United States. Crocodiles have a higher tolerance for saltwater and can live on marine islands with no freshwater. An easy way to recognize a crocodile is the shape of the snout, which is V-shaped compared to the U-shaped snout of an alligator. Crocodiles also show more teeth when their mouths are closed.
