When our founder invented Maine Hunting Shoes, he reinvented the way hunters experienced the outdoors – and the boots have changed surprisingly little in the last 107 years. #NationalInventorsDay

Leon L. Bean came up with his famous boots in 1911 when he returned from a hunting expedition with sore feet from leaky footwear. He was struck with the idea to replace the bottom part of his leather boots with rubber, making them more waterproof. "I took a pair of shoe rubbers from the stock on the shelves and had a shoe maker cut out a pair of 7 1/2" tops," he wrote in his autobiography. "The local cobbler stitched the whole thing together." While the boots still look almost the same, there have been improvements to the materials. Instead of gum rubber, the bottoms are now made of thermoplastic rubber; instead of elk calfskin, the uppers are now made from full-grain cowhide; and now the boots are available with a variety of linings, including fleece, shearling and Gore-Tex.
