Tax season — which began just three days after the end of the longest ever partial government shutdown — is off to a slow start. The total number of returns received in the first week is down more than 12% from last year, according to data from the IRS.

Additionally, those waiting on their refunds may find their checks are a little lighter than last year’s.

This is the first filing season under President Donald Trump’s new tax cuts. Republicans passed a $1.5 trillion overhaul in 2017, which cut rates for individuals and corporations — and many are eager to see how it effects the average American.
