Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was born in Coyoacán, Mexico in 1907 on the eve of the Mexican Revolution, the experience of which shaped her lifelong commitment to communism and mexicanidad. Though a bright student, a near fatal accident in 1925 meant the end of her academic studies and plan to pursue medicine. During her lengthy recovery, she took up painting, focusing on the genre that would come to define her practice: self-portraiture. Though she was little acknowledged during her life for her work, Kahlo is now recognized as one of the most important and innovative artists of the twentieth century. Aunque era una estudiante brillante, un accidente casi fatal en 1925 significó el fin de sus estudios académicos y su plan de estudiar una carrera de medicina.
