Shuaib was on his way home from school when a car bomb detonated. “I felt the shrapnel hit my neck and so I instinctively ran… but the second blast followed,” he remembers. More shrapnel hit Shuaib in the knee and thigh, leaving him bleeding on the ground of a bus station in Syria. “I took off my belt and tied my thigh firmly. I was getting dizzy and losing so much blood, so I took cover under a wooden board.” The teenager was rushed to hospital for surgery and survived. Just three days later, still in severe pain, he was determined to return to school for his final exam in Arabic. “It was very hard to concentrate because I was dizzy and in pain all the time. But I still had ambitions to fulfill.” Shuaib sat the exam from his hospital bed and passed with good grades. Two years later, he is focused on a bright future. “Now I study hard every day… to eventually major in aircraft engineering. Sometimes the pain is too much that I can’t even walk but the fact that I made it through this ordeal makes me more determined to realise my dreams.” The inspiring 16-year-old has a message for young people everywhere: “pursue your ambitions, work on your skills and never give up, no matter what.”
