We released 'American Girls' only for US(International) version. Consequently, the song was played the most on the radio in America. The song was also used as a theme song for America's Beauty Contest (Miss America 2018) which we didn't know about, haha.
The song had the most impact. We actually didn't want to make that type of song but we saw the most result and that was a good experience. Hearing your own music from America's radio station while you drive is something that can't really be experienced easily.
Based on that experience, we realized the importance of learning the gap between what we want to do and what the america's music scenes expect and continuing to fill in the gaps and work in US. As we began to realize that, that's when we made the new album.

We collaborated with Poo Bear, Justin Bieber's Producer, for the first time. 'Head High' is mostly written by him. I was so shocked by his recording style. He asked me to sing a cappella at the recording. He said, "I'll sing first, you follow me." Then he started singing like 'talalalala〜', haha.
He recorded my a cappella and he also recorded with orchestra separately, then later on, put them together. The recording process was such a mystery for me, haha. But you listen to the completed version, it's perfect. It came out pretty good. He is a R&B producer. I don't think he'd done recording with rock band before. He said "Justin Bieber does this way, too", haha.

My theme for the new album was Queen even before the movie 'Bohemian Rhapsody' came out, haha. 'Push Back' is exactly the song with a conscious of Queen. We wanted to make a song and to do recording in a way that Queen did (not like how we usually do recording by layering the guitar sounds, Queen put many different sounds during the production and sang Opera style.) When we explained it to our A&R(Artist and Repertoire), he said "twenty one pilots doesn't even use a guitar, but they are still a rock band." I thought he's seeing more things calmly than us.
