#SpeakingInDance | “In this entrance, I think of trying to be the most powerful woman that you’ve ever seen,” said the @nycballet principal @saramearns, who dances the part of the Siren in #GeorgeBalanchine’s “Prodigal Son” on March 1. “You’re floating. It’s strength beyond words — mentally, physically. And she really doesn’t care about anybody else.” In this 1929 ballet, which Balanchine choreographed at 24 for Serge Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes, the Prodigal Son is seduced by a Siren, falls to ruin and returns home to his forgiving father. But for Sara, the Siren does care about something. You can see it as she manipulates her statuesque body across the stage with icy ruthlessness. “You see it with her cape,” she told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “She picks it up very gently. She’s very delicate with it, and it’s part of her body. I really think of it is as an extra limb: It’s like it’s my partner.” @_flodur made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
