“I want to congratulate all the students who were brave enough to take part in this competition...I so enjoyed hearing the two recitations.”
The Prince of Wales today presented the Cranmer Awards; a contest organised annually by the Prayer Book Society.
School pupils from across the country recite a passage of their choice from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.
The book was compiled by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, and is still used for services in many churches.
Did you know the Book of Common Prayer is the source of many words and phrases we still use today? ? These include ‘make haste’ and ‘at their wits’ end’.
Today’s awards marked the 30th year of the competition - The Prince is Patron of the @prayerbooksociety and presented the prizes at the inaugural Cranmer Awards in 1989.
