My grandfather just passed away. He was 101. My regret for not being home for so long, taking for granted that he was going to live forever (and man, he really convinced us that he was going to) and missing him at the end is heavy. I was told that he often ask of me and how I have been. I was planning a visit this year. As the Asian family goes, we didn’t put many things in words but I hope he knew that I thanked him and respected him. I really hope that he knew. This is the third time I post this story below with this photo of him from the morning at the airport when I was flying back to NY. He always came to see me at the airport when I arrived and sent me off when I left. In his suit and tie. I feel like there is something to telling his story 3 times to have its resolution. He had been working at his factory until age 97 when he broke his hip & it put him in wheelchair, and even then, he wanted to go back to work so he went to rehab and he walked again. Right before he was born, his father sank to the bottom of the sea with his ship. He was the captain of the fishing ship, and since as the captain he had such pride for his ship, people speculated that, since they would never find him if he was separated from it, he tied himself to the mast of the ship and sank with it, and that was how he was found. So my grandfather never knew his father. His mother remarried & abandoned him soon after. He was passed around. At age 8, he was told that she also passed away. At age 15, he started working as a carpenter. He went to war at age 18. He used to often say that the time of war was the easiest time of his life up till then, and even though he never complained, obviously because his life hadn't been easy. Then, he started working at die-cast metal factory and eventually took it over, and he had worked for 80 years straight. I think my mannerism and even how I dress is based on my idea of him. I respected this man. And the thing I respected most about my grandfather was, despite the fact he had pretty tough life (or maybe because of it), as long as I can remember, he was always gently smiling like in this picture. And I was told that he was till the end.
