Beautifully painted, this bold and rare work was executed during one of René #Magritte’s most innovative periods, the late 1930s, when he painted very few works but some of the most important ones in his career – including Le principe du Plaisir, which broke the record at #Sotheby’s New York last November. L'Étoile du matin was acquired shortly after its execution by a renowned Belgian couple who were close friends of the artist and has remained in the same #collection since 1939. A unique subject within Magritte’s oeuvre, the composition juxtaposes the profile of a Native American with that of his beloved wife Georgette. Magritte saw it as the combination of two forms of perfection. It will now be offered at #auction for the first time, as part of our #Surrealist Art Evening Sale on 26 February, and is on public view in our #London galleries until then.
