“My mother always advised me to go to school. My father pushed me to go too. Some of the girls cannot go – their brothers or fathers forbid them,” says Wa-ed, a 16-year-old Syrian girl who lives in a refugee camp in Jordan. One day, the place beside her in class was empty - her best friend had stopped coming to school. “I passed by her place every day… I explained to her that it will help us in the future, that we will go learn, study and change our lives and be better people. She kept saying no but eventually teacher Khawla and I convinced her to return to school. I felt that I really achieved something. I was happy. Now she sits beside me again in class.”
