Friends,
I'm really sad today. ??
I was sent a heads up about a 3 year old cat that's going to be declawed soon.
I'm having a conversation with the husband who tells me he's on my side and is against declawing but his wife insists on having it done so that this cat won't "scratch up the furniture."
I told him that we will help her with any issues she might have if this cat is scratching her beloved furniture and asked if she will have a conversation with us but he said it's not open to discussion. ????
I asked him if she knows how mutilating and inhumane declawing is and told him to inform her that this is an older cat so the negative consequences will be even worse for this poor cat. I asked him if she knows about the easy, humane options like sturdy scratchers, scratching pads, nail trims, etc.
Please help me understand how a human being, who knows the facts about this mutilating amputation procedure, can still go ahead and have it done to a cat?
I'm holding out hope that I will hear back from this lady and she has a change of heart. I've even offered to find a new home for this cat with a family who truly cares about her health and well-being.
Please send some good thoughts about this because the thought of this poor 3 year old cat being put through this barbaric amputation procedure is just so heartbreaking and tragic.
Please help us and support our nonprofit so we can end this cat cruelty sooner than later! www.citythekitty.org

Hi. You made a difference with me. Please don’t attack me, I’m only responding to help the cause, so you can speak to someone who could tell you the other side—so you can better understand how to get through to people like me... I recently adopted two cats and was planning to declaw them—I’ve always declawed, felt the cats were fine and didn’t even notice they were declawed, and didn’t see any problem with it. But I was having a nagging doubt, so I started reading the comments in declaw to see what people were saying... What made me decide not to declaw we’re facts. Seeing x-rays was HUGE!! That was pretty shocking... Seeing calloused pads from declawed cats next to healthy pads. Seeing the different shapes of the pads before and after. Seeing a healthy posture vs a tilted, tiptoe posture... That said I didn’t respond to attacks. It’s fair to say it’s animal cruelty and back it up with facts, but I didn’t like or personally respond to emotional manipulation. I don’t like seeing people yelled at or called names, having someone pretend to be a cat and cry at people, etc. Maybe it works for some people, but I find it difficult to listen to people who are manipulative.
But this account is GREAT! Thank you for what you do. I will not be declawing my two kittens. Just spaying.... Please feel free to ask me anything—I only ask that you try to be nice to me, and don’t start trolling my account or anything.

Hi @citythekitty, I wanted to share some great news with you. The province of Alberta Veterinary Med Association here in Canada has voted by 98% majority to ban declawing and all other unnecessary procedures (ear/tail cropping, devocalization, etc). My province has already banned these mutilations. The Canadian National Veterinary Association no longer supports the procedures, but has yet to ban it nationwide. Change is happening! Look at he big picture on tough days, we are making a difference! #pawsneedclaws #bandeclawing #adoptdontshop #catsofinstagram #instacats #kittylove

I have four cats from different ages and situations. Clawing up anything has never been an issue. If you work with the cat right away to understand the rules of the house and give them their own scratching surfaces, it shouldn't ever be a problem. My cats LOVE their scratchers!! I also make sure when I pick furniture, or carpeting, that it doesn't mimic a scratcher. There are lots of options if you keep an open mind!

Oh my goodness, this poor baby has had his normal paws for three years and there is a vet out there who is willing to declaw this animal??? If I were in the position of the vet, I would agree to do it and then I would take that cat and turn him over to a rescue. Absolutely horrific to think of the mutilation he’ll wake up with after his surgery.

I can’t understand why they even consider having a cat if they are sooo afraid of their furiniture that they have to molest their pet... It really, really upsets me.. I didn’t even know that it was legal to do so 😿😿 Thank goodness for you!♥️ We pray that this kitty comes to another home - with good people...

This is really heartbreaking😿😿😿 I would love the husband even more if he was strong enough to tell his wife that if she mutilated the poor cat - he would have to leave her! I could NOT live with a person so unable to feel empathy and compassion!
