An English class assignment her high school freshman year moved Noor Aldayeh (@nooraldayeh) to start speaking openly about her struggle with an eating disorder. “The whole point was just to work on public speaking,” says Noor, now a senior. “I was just going to do, like, a random subject that I was interested in, but I don’t know why, I had this weird inkling — a feeling I had to talk about my eating disorder.” When she was 11 years old, Noor started to feel insecure in her body. Eventually, she began to binge and purge. Three years later, Noor, an avid dancer, finally opened up to her doctor about her struggles with bulimia, then connected with the right therapist and nutritionist to help move her into a place of recovery. She had not spoken to anyone beyond a few family members and close friends about her eating disorder, but after giving this talk at school, things changed. “I’d say more than half of the class, at one point, either after the day of the talk or within that week, came to me individually and told me their own stories and told me that they appreciated what I was talking about,” says Noor. Today, 17-year-old Noor is a founder of the Education Emotion Project, an organization on a mission to bring awareness around mental health and make resources available to all, and she even became a National Eating Disorders Association (@neda) advocate. “Working with NEDA has been very surreal for me, because before I had started talking about my eating disorder publicly, they were a resource that I actually used and I turned to a lot,” says Noor. This week is the start of #NEDAwareness in the US. To see more stories and be inspired to #ComeAsYouAre, visit @neda. Photo of @nooraldayeh by @evanysphotography
