The Forbidden City in #Beijing opened its gates to the public at night this month for the first time in almost a century. The complex, which is the former home of the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties, became a #museum in 1925 and has recently only been open at night to a privileged few. The idea to open it to the public proved to be a hit, with the museum welcoming thousands of guests. Those who managed to get in saw an array of light displays as well as an opera performance. The museum organized the openings to coincide with the annual Lantern Festival, marking the 15th day of the first month of the lunar year. It was part of an effort to revitalize the image of a museum complex that has been notoriously conservative. Yang Jie, who visited the museum with her husband, described the showing as “electrifying.” “It makes it possible to see a different side of the #ForbiddenCity,” she said. @gillessabrie shot these photos of the complex.
